Who is responsible
The International Order of Jurists (“the Order”) is responsible for the personal data described here. You can reach the Order at ioj@iojurists.org or through the contact page.
What the Order processes, and why
| When you… | The Order processes | Purpose and basis |
|---|---|---|
| apply for membership | Your name, contact details, country, nationality (if given), legal background, the documents and photograph you send, and your declarations. | To assess your application and, if you are admitted, to keep your membership. Basis: your request to become a member and your consent. |
| are a member | Your member record: name, photograph, title, category, field of law, jurisdiction, dates, status and standing. | To keep the register of members and to show your record to those who hold your card or private link. Basis: your membership and your consent. |
| check a member | Nothing that identifies you. The number of checks from a connection is counted for a short time to prevent abuse. | To protect records against automated harvesting. Basis: legitimate interest. |
| commend a member or raise a concern | Your name and email address (unless you write anonymously), your relationship with the member, and what you describe. | To consider the commendation or investigate the concern and to keep the member’s standing up to date. Basis: legitimate interest in maintaining the Order’s standards. |
| contact the Order | Your name, email address and message. | To answer you. Basis: legitimate interest. |
The Order checks the identity document you show when you apply, but does not keep a copy of it.
Who can see your data
- Applications, documents, reports and messages are seen only by the people who run the Order. Documents are stored in a protected area of the website that cannot be reached from the internet.
- A member’s record is shown only to people who open it from the member’s card or private link. Records are not listed on the website and are kept out of search engines.
- Records never show the identity of a person who commended a member or raised a concern, or the details of a concern.
- The website and its email are hosted by Infomaniak in Switzerland, which processes the data on the Order’s behalf. Switzerland is recognised by the European Union as providing an adequate level of data protection.
The Order does not sell personal data and does not use it for advertising.
Cookies and statistics
The website counts visits with a statistics tool that runs on the website itself, uses no cookies and does not identify visitors. A small functional cookie may remember your language choice. People who manage the website receive a login cookie. No advertising or tracking cookies are used, and no fonts or scripts are loaded from other websites on the public pages.
How long data is kept
- Applications that do not lead to membership: deleted within twelve months of the decision.
- Member records: kept while you are a member. When you leave, your record is taken down and your details are removed. If a member is removed by the Order after an upheld concern, the fact of removal stays on record.
- Commendations and concerns: kept as long as they are needed for the member’s record and for the handling of the matter.
- Messages: kept as long as needed to answer them, and normally no longer than two years.
Your rights
You may ask the Order to show you the personal data it holds about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict its use, or to give it to you in a usable form. You may object to processing based on legitimate interest, and withdraw your consent at any time. Write to ioj@iojurists.org; the Order replies within one month.
If you are not satisfied with the Order’s answer, you may complain to the data protection authority of the country where you live or work.
